Horse racing lovers will be glued to their television sets on Saturday as the 163rd edition of the world famous Grand National is set to get underway at Aintree.

Last year's winner winner and massive 100-1 sportsbook outsider Mon Mome will take to the field once again, but will be a fraction of the starting odds last term. Comply Or Die, clear winner in 2008 and runner-up last year, could be amongst the market favourites once again while Silver Birch, triumphant in 2007, is not guaranteed a run this time around.

We will take a look at the others that catch the eye as we eagerly prepare to witness the sport's grandest event.

BLACK APALACHI - The top Irish hope has featured in two previous Nationals but has failed to finish on both occasions. Suffered a terrible fall in 2008 before unseating jockey Denis O'Regan last year at the 22nd fence when in the lead. If he can avoid trouble, he has a great chance to make it third time lucky on Merseyside.

NICHE MARKET - A horse of great promise, showing his style when winning the Irish Grand National last spring and finishing second to Denman at Newbury in the Hennessy and third to Tricky Trickster in the Aon Chase. Should run close here.

TRICKY TRICKSTER - After winning the Aon Chase at Newbury in February, Tricky Trickster was seen as a tempting each-way bet for the Cheltenham Gold Cup last time out. However, the horse had a mare and, despite the misfortune at the festival, he could be good to come up trumps on the biggest stage.

SNOWY MORNING - Willie Mullins trained Snowy Morning will be interesting the backers this year. Finished third in 2008 and a disappointing ninth last term but, if he can learn from previous mistakes, he could be right up at the top on Saturday.

BIG FELLA THANKS - With Ruby Walsh on Big Fella Thanks, you cannot overlook the sixth-placed finisher last year. Picked up a fine win at Newbury in March in preparation for the big one.

CHARACTER BUILDING - The Lamb in 1868 and 1871 and Nicolaus Silver in 1961 are the only greys ever to win the big National prize in its long and illustrious history. Can Character Building charge to Grand National honours this year?
